Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in New York City in 1924, and she made her star-making debut at the age of 19 in To Have and Have Not with Humphrey Bogart. She would later marry Bogart, and they stayed together until his passing in 1957. She was politically active, which led to her losing film roles according to Variety. Still, she starred in such acclaimed films as The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Key Largo.
Bacall won two Tonys for her stage work in Applause and Woman of the Year. She also garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The Mirror Has Two Faces, and eventually received an Honorary Academy Award in 2009.
Bacall played Witch of the Waste in Disney's English dub of Howl's Moving Castle. That film's lead English voice actress, Jean Simmons (Sophie), passed away in 2010, and the original Howl's Moving Castle novelist Diana Wynne Jones passed away in 2011. Bacall's final film role was "The Grey One" in the English dub of the Oscar-nominated French animated film Ernest & Celestine.
