Nikkei: Nintendo's Next Console to Use Android-Based OS
posted on by Egan Loo
The Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei is reporting on Monday that Nintendo will use an Android-based operating system for its next console, currently codenamed NX. Nikkei cites a "certain party of interest."
Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata had noted last year that with the iOS or Android operating system, developers have a common platform to make software for a wide range of hardware — thus leading to more software. He added that Nintendo platforms should have the same advantage. Nikkei notes that developers have had difficulty making games profitably for the current Wii U console.
Nintendo had said that it will release more details about the NX next year. Iwata acknowledged in May that the company is considering making NX region-free.
